| Description |
The American College of Surgeons Health Policy Research Institute sponsors a one year research fellowship program to orient and train professionals with surgical medical training in the methods and content of health services research.
During the course of the fellowship training year, surgical fellows identify a topic of interest, design and conduct a study using health services research methods, and produce a written summary of findings to submit for publication. The American College of Surgeons Health Policy Research Institute staff mentor and assist surgical fellows in identifying appropriate opportunities for presenting and publishing research findings and future research. Fellows also participate in a weekly seminar series, which includes professional development workshops and offers access to a multidisciplinary group of faculty and other pre- and post-doctoral fellows at UNC. Fellows are required to complete a series of short courses designed for clinicians entering a research year at UNC. Fellows are required to devote 40 hours per week to their research with the training program.
Fellows may obtain additional training in health services research through campus-based Institutes as well as formal degree programs within the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Fellows may take classes informally or pursue a Master of Public Health degree through UNC’s Public Health Leadership Program, a one-year program for practitioners with health experience. |

In addition to the ACS HPRI application, applicants must provide a current Curriculum Vitae, graduate school transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, subject to award availability. Applicants are encouraged to schedule a visit at their own expense to UNC for interviews. Fellowships are awarded for a 12-month period usually beginning in August or January. Fellowships may be renewable for a second 12-month period as long as the fellow continues to meet program requirements. |
