Eligibility To be eligible for SMDEP, an applicant must:
  • be currently enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in college;
  • have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, with 2.75 in the sciences;
  • be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent resident visa; and
  • not have previously participated in SMDEP.
Other factors considered in the admissions process include whether an applicant:
  • have a critical reading SAT score of at least 500, mathematics score of at least 400, and a writing score of at least 490 or an ACT score of at least 19;
  • identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine and/or dentistry (as defined independently by each program site);
  • comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background;
  • has demonstrated interest in issues affecting underserved populations;
  • has local and/or regional residency; and
  • submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation.
Each SMDEP site makes its admissions decisions on a "first come, first served" basis, therefore applying as early as possible increases your chance of being selected at your designated program site(s).

Students should contact their school's health professions advisor or career counselor for advice on choosing which summer to apply to SMDEP and for other information about a career in the health professions.

Instructions To apply to SMDEP, you must submit all of the following materials by the deadline:
  • SMDEP Web Application—Once successfully submitted, your information is immediately available to SMDEP.
  • Transcripts—Processed within 10 business days of receipt at the National Program Office. An admissions decision will not be given until all transcripts are received. Please follow up with your registrar's office to ensure that transcripts arrive by the deadline. Please Note: If you are a freshman in college and you have not received your first semester grades, please allow time for grades to be established before sending your transcripts to the National Program Office.
  • Letters of Recommendation—Processed within 10 business days of receipt at the National Program Office.
  • Late submission of transcripts and recommendations could result in your application not being processed. Please ensure that all of your documents are submitted to the NPO on or before the application deadline of March 1! The NPO strongly encourages early submission of the application to increase your chance of being considered by the program site(s) you designated, since applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Providing correct and timely information facilitates efficient application processing. Review the program descriptions and identify the site(s) that best fit your needs before completing the application.

    Please note: Students may attend SMDEP only once. After completing SMDEP, students are encouraged to also take part in other enrichment opportunities.

    See http://www.smdep.org/apply.htm for web application and further information.
