Tricks and Tips to Make the Most of the HWIC Web Site

The Health Workforce Information Center’s web site, hwic.org, is a rich repository of health workforce information. It provides access to everything from grant opportunities to journal articles to news stories across a wide range of health workforce issues. Here are some tips that will help you get the most out of this extensive web resource.

Browse the Topics, Professions and States

The first step in getting to know HWIC is browsing our online collections for over 40 health workforce topics, more than 60 health professions and all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Here we bring together the most relevant journal articles, web sites, funding opportunities, news and more. Start browsing:

Narrow, Narrow, Narrow!

Narrowing results menuIn real estate, it might be all about location, but in a collection of over 10,000 health workforce resources, funding opportunities, organizations and more, it is all about narrowing. Use HWIC’s narrowing options to refine your search to the most targeted information to meet your needs. Throughout the HWIC site, you will see narrowing options to the left:

By combining resource types, topics, professions, and states, you can make a unique list focused on your specific interests. Each possible narrowing term indicates how many records will match. You can refine your narrowing selection by adding and removing choices until you have the set that best suits your needs.

Power Search

The search box is available in the upper right of every HWIC web page. Enter your keywords to find matching funding, web sites, news stories, and more. Some tips to make the most of search:

  • Consider synonyms – compensation, wages, salary
  • Have an exact phrase you hope to find? Use quote marks to set it off – “pay gap”
  • Watch for HWIC Tools at the top of your results list. We highlight matching topic, profession and state guides, which can be excellent starting points for browsing.
  • Use the Table of Contents on the left to jump right to the search results you want – resources, funding, organizations, news, or events
  • Start with broader search terms and use the narrowing options to drill down
