Faculty
Many health care faculty members will be retiring in the next decade, thus leaving a lack of professionals who would be qualified to train the next generation. Faculty shortages can limit the number of students who can be educated in a given profession, regardless of the critical need for trained professionals in that field. Researchers writing on behalf of the U.S. Secretary of Education state that the nursing and dental communities are of particular concern, “with too few students pursuing the advanced degrees required to teach because of the lack of financial incentives to become an educator.” Other health care faculty shortages are due to high turnover rates, lingering vacancies stemming from a lack of response, elimination of positions, and budget limitations. The report suggests that “one possible remedy for the nursing faculty shortage would be to provide incentives for qualified AA and BSN nurses to continue their nursing educations by enrolling in RN to MSN programs.”
