Recruitment and Retention
Ensuring an adequate health care workforce is based on the workforce pipeline, which builds interest in medical and healthcare careers and in recruitment and retention (R&R) activities. While recruitment focuses on attracting current health professionals and students to open positions or to future positions, retention focuses on keeping health care providers employed in their healthcare facilities. Recruitment efforts may focus on enhancing the diversity of providers, identifying people who are likely to practice in areas of high need, and ensuring the needed mix of provider types. Successful R&R programs are based on recruiting for retention - making an appropriate match between candidates, their families, communities and healthcare facilities.
Programs that support health workforce recruitment exist at the federal, state, and local level and include scholarship, loans, signing bonuses and loan repayment programs. Communities may develop incentive programs that include total compensation including benefit packages, mentoring by experienced health care providers, community mentoring and support for work-life balance. Some examples of retention activities that encourage health care workers to stay in their positions include comprehensive salary and benefit programs, other financial incentives such as retention bonuses, support for continuing education, opportunities for career advancement, and strong support for work-life balance.
