Overview

Continuing education refers to educational activities undertaken after a professional has been licensed and entered the workforce that aim to maintain or improve competency, knowledge, and performance. Continuing education is an important tool in strengthening and maintaining a highly-skilled health workforce because it effectively disseminates new research findings and current practices, expanding the awareness, knowledge base, and skills of health professionals. Continuing education is required for continued licensure and certification for many professions. Continuing education often takes place through traditional live classroom instruction, but can also be made available across distances through online or other interactive technologies, as well as correspondence study. Generally, credit for continuing education is measured in CEUs (continuing education units), although physicians earn CME (continuing medical education) credits.
