Health informaticians collect and analyze medical and health data in order to make the data informative and useful to other medical professionals. If the health informatician is a medical professional, they may then formulate a course of treatment. Health informatics is research oriented. Health informaticians are highly educated in both information science and health care. Usually a health informatician is already a health-care professional, but one who wants to acquire greater research skills by acquiring a graduate degree in health informatics. Non-medical professionals may also be interested in acquiring the research skills that a course of study in health informatics provides. Areas of research interest for health informaticians range from disease management and the Internet, to telemedicine, to electronic medical records, to the security of health-care systems, to HIPPA and the privacy of patient data. Health informatics is a relatively new field, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not provide current employment numbers for health informaticians. The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education reports that there are 6 master’s level, 55 bachelor’s level, and 203 associate level health informatics degree programs in the United States. The graduate programs available require that the applicant already has an established professional background in medicine, such as a licensed doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
