Overview
Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce asserts that the health care workforce is unprepared to care for the growing elderly population. The report also states that by 2030, 78 million Americans—20 percent of the population—will be 65 years of age or older. Older patients also have additional, and more complex, health problems. To address the problem, more geriatrics training for all health professions is needed. Many health care workforce experts believe that the current geriatrics workforce shortage exists because the field attracts fewer specialists than others do, and there is also a high turnover rate among workers. Other issues concerning geriatric health care workforce are compensation, lack of incentive programs, and low Medicare reimbursement rates for primary care.
