Overview

Scholarships are a form of financial aid provided to a student due to academic performance, athletic skills, or other criteria. Scholarships typically do not have to be paid back. Health workforce scholarships are available for specific professions, such as nursing, medicine, dentistry, and other health professions. Scholarships may also be targeted at specific populations to support diversity within the health professions. The federal government, state governments, professional associations, and foundations offer scholarships to help ensure an adequate health workforce. Some scholarships include a requirement that the recipient practice in a particular location for a specified time period, while others have no strings attached. Students interested in financial aid should consult their educational institution’s financial aid office for a list of opportunities specific to their institution and field of study.

Fellowships provide unique opportunities for researchers and practitioners to conduct research, work with leading health policy experts, and attend school. In the field of health care, they often support research that might address quality, safety, and efficiency of health care for all, and can be in specialty and non-specialty programs, training institutions, or medical schools. Providing fellowship programs as incentives for medical students, students of other health professions, and researchers helps address the health workforce shortage problem and aids in recruitment and retention of healthcare workers.
